The Awakening - By Sonny Carroll

A time comes in your life when you finally get it...when, in the midst of all your fears and insanity, you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out...ENOUGH! Enough fighting and crying and blaming and struggling to hold on.

Then, like a child quieting down after a tantrum, you blink back your tears and begin to look at the world through new eyes.

This is your awakening.

You realize it's time to stop hoping and waiting for something to change, or for happiness, safety and security to magically appear over the next horizon. You realize that in the real world there aren't always fairy tale endings, and that any guarantee of "happily ever after" must begin with you... and in the process a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.

You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and that not everyone will always love, appreciate or approve of who or what you are... and that's OK. They are entitled to their own views and opinions.

You learn the importance of loving and championing yourself... and in the process a sense of new found confidence is born of self-approval. You stop complaining and blaming other people for the things they did to you - or didn't do for you - and you learn that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected.

You learn that people don't always say what they mean or mean what they say and that not everyone will always be there for you and that everything isn't always about you.

So, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of yourself... and in the process a sense of safety and security is born of self-reliance.

You stop judging and pointing fingers and you begin to accept people as they are and to overlook their shortcomings and human frailties... and in the process a sense of peace and contentment is born of forgiveness.

You learn to open up to new worlds and different points of view. You begin reassessing and redefining who you are and what you really stand for.

You learn the difference between wanting and needing and you begin to discard the doctrines and values you've outgrown, or should never have bought into to begin with.

You learn that there is power and glory in creating and contributing and you stop maneuvering through life merely as a "consumer" looking for your next fix.

You learn that principles such as honesty and integrity are not the outdated ideals of a bygone era, but the mortar that holds together the foundation upon which you must build a life.

You learn that you don't know everything, it's not your job to save the world and that you can't teach a pig to sing. You learn that the only cross to bear is the one you choose to carry and that martyrs get burned at the stake.

Then you learn about love. You learn to look at relationships as they really are and not as you would have them be. You learn that alone does not mean lonely.

You stop trying to control people, situations and outcomes. You learn to distinguish between guilt and responsibility and the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say NO.

You also stop working so hard at putting your feelings aside, smoothing things over and ignoring your needs.

You learn that your body really is your temple. You begin to care for it and treat it with respect. You begin to eat a balanced diet, drink more water, and take more time to exercise.

You learn that being tired fuels doubt, fear, and uncertainty and so you take more time to rest. And, just as food fuels the body, laughter fuels our soul. So you take more time to laugh and to play.

You learn that, for the most part, you get in life what you believe you deserve, and that much of life truly is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You learn that anything worth achieving is worth working for and that wishing for something to happen is different than working toward making it happen.

More importantly, you learn that in order to achieve success you need direction, discipline and perseverance. You also learn that no one can do it all alone, and that it's OK to risk asking for help.

You learn the only thing you must truly fear is fear itself. You learn to step right into and through your fears because you know that whatever happens you can handle it and to give in to fear is to give away the right to live life on your own terms.

You learn to fight for your life and not to squander it living under a cloud of impending doom.

You learn that life isn't always fair, you don't always get what you think you deserve and that sometimes bad things happen to unsuspecting, good people... and you learn not to always take it personally.

You learn that nobody's punishing you and everything isn't always somebody's fault. It's just life happening. You learn to admit when you are wrong and to build bridges instead of walls.

You learn that negative feelings such as anger, envy and resentment must be understood and redirected or they will suffocate the life out of you and poison the universe that surrounds you.

You learn to be thankful and to take comfort in many of the simple things we take for granted, things that millions of people upon the earth can only dream about: a full refrigerator, clean running water, a soft warm bed, a long hot shower.

Then, you begin to take responsibility for yourself by yourself and you make yourself a promise to never betray yourself and to never, ever settle for less than your heart's desire.

You make it a point to keep smiling, to keep trusting, and to stay open to every wonderful possibility.

You hang a wind chime outside your window so you can listen to the wind.

Finally, with courage in your heart, you take a stand, you take a deep breath, and you begin to design the life you want to live as best you can.

So many things can fill the hole

So many things can fill the hole.  Some for only a moment, some for longer.  Even when it is filled, we know on some level, it is only a temporary filling.

How does it get filled?  Do we fill it ourselves, intentionally?

We have the power to fill it, but not always to un-fill it.  If we give ourselves the complete power, to fill, realise it is temporary and complete acceptance, then there are no surprises.

If my relationship with another fills the hole, I fill it.  Not them.  I fill it with the love that I feel for them.  The things that I do, through that love, fill the hole.  They may leave.  But since I filled it, not them, the ability to fill the hole is not lost.  I can still fill it.  It was filled through love.  The love I have for myself can fill the hole in the same way.

Hole filled, am I complete?

I feel aware of the limitations; the temporary filling can be lost in an instant.

So the hole is not filled.  I just told myself it was.  I tricked my mind.  Or my mind tricked me.

What if I have the ability to accept and observe my mind?  I accept what it creates a temporary filling.  Accept the feelings it brings.  Accept the knowing it is temporary.  Accept the instant when the filling is lost.  If I observe this cycle, and remain unabsorbed, I give myself the power to simply observe the hurt or pain of the lost filling.  It is not really felt, since there was no trickery.  I knew it was to come back at some instant.

So with the power to control the filling of the hole, the ability to accept and observe cycle after cycle, there is always a hole.

The fillings are all temporary.

Unless the filling itself is Infinite.

Perspective gives you sight

Perspective gives you sight. Lack of perspective keeps you blind. Perspective is almost like creating a line. Another perspective comes and creates another line across the first one in a new direction. This process continues until there is a circle of perspective that gives a person a 360 degree view about life and existence. This is known as infinity or Third Eye, the inner eye of complete perspective. A human being then, through an increased perspective and clarity of perception gets a new dimension to life. The linear circle of perspective becomes a sphere.

Understand, that perspective leads to a new dimension to life, the linear becomes non-linear, the circle becomes a sphere! This is profound! Perspective will bring you to a new way of thinking, but once perspective creates a new dimension, this new dimension will bring you to a new way of seeing, a new way of being and a new way of perceiving infinity. So, what does this really mean in day-to-day life?

This means that a person begins to see all of life in a new Universal light. That everyone is just a human being, there is no such thing as a Sikh or a Muslim or a Hindu or a Jew or a Jain or a Buddhist. Everyone is just a human being. Also, a person begins to see that no one is better or worse than anyone else, no one is higher or lower, everyone just are as they are, and they are perfect as they are. Everyone! Every single person! Whether a person is a murderer or a prostitute, or whether a person is a Saint or a Queen, or an enemy or a friend. Everyone is perfect as they are, because that is how God made them. This is a Universal perspective which encompasses the entire of humanity and frees a person from the traps of the ego which attempts to separate, segregate and divide everyone.

So I would invite you the reader that today may you become open to a new perspective of life, allow a new way of thinking to enter into your being and expand you. Usually it is the perspective that you have the most "problem" with which you need to learn to accept. Don't live in fear or be in your head that "If I accept this, then so and so will happen". Let it be. Just absorb a new perspective through acceptance, and slowly you will begin to see a new dimension unfold to your life.

Degrees of being present

Being present and the degrees to being present are two different things. There are three basic degrees of being present. The first degree is the realisation that you are who you are, and I am who I am. There are no judgements associated with this, as a person you see others as they are and as they are not, and yourself as you are and as you are not. The next degree, is the realisation that you are who I am, and I am who you are. The sense of separation is removed from the experience of being present. And finally is the realisation that neither you are, nor I am, but it is.

The question then arises, what is it? It is the totality of consciousness. Some people call this God, others Allah, Ram, Krishna, Christ or Waheguru. Whatever the terminology, this totality of consciousness is all that exists, all that has ever existed, all that exists now and all that shall exist in the future. Another way to say this is God and me, me and God are one. Or God, I am nothing, you are everything. It is a complete submission and union to the totality of consciousness.

It is not that you cease to exist, but in that space, you become of that totality of consciousness, and the totality of consciousness works through you, with you and for you to fulfil its purpose. This purpose is to aware people into recognising this consciousness. Consciousness itself achieves this in a myriad of ways, and thus there are so many religions, tools and techniques to expand the individual consciousness, into group consciousness and then universal consciousness. This is another way to explain the degrees of being present: individual, group and universal.

Since being present is a function of consciousness, by expanding consciousness you become more present. It is in the present moment that life becomes clear, and true joy can be experienced. Therefore to live in the present moment-to-moment and to expand the consciousness to become more present is the highest purpose of human life.

Short-term Happiness or Long-term Bliss?

We as human beings are programmed from birth to always go for the short-term happiness. Short-term happiness is anything which we do or look for which is outside of ourselves. This can include drinking alcohol, taking drugs, making friendships and relationships with people, listening to music, going shopping, earning money or having sex. Actually, everything that we can see, hear, smell, touch and taste can be included in this list. So, then two questions arise:

  1. Does this mean that all these things are wrong to do?
  2. How can we go beyond short-term happiness and attain long-term bliss?

So firstly, no, all of the above is neither wrong nor right. We are not talking about morality here, we’re talking about reality. These worldly things will only bring you either closer to your destiny or further away, depending on your state of mind. That’s all it is a question of, a state of mind. If you can learn to live in the world and not be attached to it, and you can learn to make your mind your slave so that lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego does not get in the way of you achieving your destiny, then you are living as a liberated human being.

But this is easier said than done because everything you have been taught is false. You’ve only been taught to fill your mind with junk, and to relate to your ego and emotions as if they are the real you. You’ve also been taught that everything your senses tell you is real. None of these are true. You must understand that the mind is very clever, it plays a lot of games with you, which you’re not aware of. But you should feel hopeful, because the mind can be reprogrammed and controlled. All that is required is consciousness, and by nature, you are consciousness. That’s all you really are. So you have everything you need in your backpack of life to set off on this journey to find reality and to control the mind.

It is through the control of the mind that we can attain long-term bliss. Bliss isn’t like anything you’ve every felt. You may have felt snippets of it when falling in love with someone, or if you’re a mother, the love for your child. But these experiences are just snippets. The real wealth, the real happiness, the real joy is in the stillness of your mind. When you become fully present to life and reality, no longer does the mind go back and forth between the past and the future. It is still. It is calm. It is centered. In that space, through a constant consciousness, the mind turns from a monkey mind, into a Divine mind. The Divine mind is useful because it is one-pointed and will not play games with you. Instead, it will aid you like a good companion and servant, to achieve whatever you want.

In order to achieve long-term bliss and to create a Divine mind, a person must meditate consciously. Meditation is the process of stilling the mind. I always hear people say “I can’t meditate because there’s too many thoughts!”. Well, that’s the whole point of meditation: to clear them out! Just like taking a shower you clear your physical body, you meditate to clear your mental body. And it is a process that you have to be patient with. Practice makes you realise you’re already perfect, but there will be ups and downs. You must gracefully ride through these. Meditating is the greatest challenge and the greatest journey a human being can undertake, because it means you have to take responsibility for every part of yourself. Every single part. In the ancient script of Gurmukhi this phrase is called ‘Ang Sung Waheguru’. It means that every part of you is coordinated towards a single purpose of higher consciousness.

So please, it is my prayer that you give yourself the gift of meditation and incorporate it into your everyday life, into your everyday smile and your everyday step, so that through a Divine mind you can be healthy, happy and holy in every facet of your life.

Inner Meaning

The search for inner meaning is an inverse process. In order to get to a place of inner meaning, first we must strip all meaning from our lives. The search for Truth is an inverse process. In order to get to something, we must first get to nothing. It is in the stillness of nothing that everything becomes clear.

The reason for this is that reality is not known to us, largely it is unknown. We have assumed a particular reality from our parents, and they from their parents, and so the cycle continues. Many of our learned behaviours, ways of thinking and being, do not serve us and our destiny. We have consciously, subconsciously and unconsciously put meaning into things that have no meaning in reality, and have put no meaning into things that have all meaning in reality.

Therefore, in order to come to knowing what serves us or not, where we should place meaning or not, we must elevate our mind to a place in which we can see clearly. This means reversing everything we have ever done until nothing is left. No thoughts. No ideas. No concepts. No meaning. In that nothingness, we can see reality and our part in that reality very clearly and therefore can begin to rebuild our lives, habits and ways of being to serve us towards our destiny, and to put meaning into things than matter and strip it from things that don’t matter.

This all sounds very philosophical, but I am a practical man, so what does this mean in day-to-day down-to-earth language? Well, firstly we must look at our lives in some way, some new way. Let’s start with one basic of all life: relationships. Think of someone you hate. Now ask yourself, what makes you hate that person? Contemplate this for a while. Now think that actually, its not that you hate them, its that you hate yourself in some way. Contemplate the gap there is in you which is making you see that you hate another person. As you continue to go within yourself to find the answer, the entire universe will also start teaching you about this small aspect of yourself. The universe will begin to create situations in your life in which you can uncover and let go of this gap. As you left go of this aspect that doesn’t serve you, new opportunities open up for you. Just as something goes, something else comes. And now you can see that from something so small, something so profound can come about. This is the process of finding inner meaning.

In this new blog, I intend to write about many aspects of Sikh Dharma, Meditation, Kundalini Yoga, Spirituality, Philosophy, God, Oneness of Religion, Spiritual Stories and Applications of Spirituality in everyday life.
